FOR THREE NIGHTS IN 2022, Josh Groban mounted his spectacular variety show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. He would perform several songs from his own catalog, however it was the long roster of special guests that made the evenings unique and special, from duets with Itzakh Perlman and Cindi Lauper to an interview with the Marvellous Mrs. Masel herself, Rachel Brosnahan.
The orchestra that is part of every Josh Groban show was placed on the Radio City Band Car, which is used each year for the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular but seldom for any other shows. This multi-tiered “sled” resembles a parade float and can move up or down stage under its own power as well as elevate when coming to rest on one of the 80’ wide lifts integrated in the classic venue’s stage.
The look for each moment of the show was brilliantly conceived by creative director Tiana Gandelman, from the live painting of artist David Garibaldi to the hilarious improv brought forth by Freestyle Love Supreme. It was up to myself and associates Jeff Farrow and Amy Edge to do our own painting of the show with the house RCMH lighting system, augmented with almost 300 Martin VDO Sceptron light bars adorning the band car and bespoke “starburst” set pieces that had been designed by the team at Fireplay.
The massive in-house LED wall was used to great effect, allowing the names of each act to be announced in true Broadway fashion on a virtual marquee. Brilliant content was provided by Brody Harper and Ryan Slaughter of TwoSevenTwo Productions, who added some of Josh’s existing content to a collection of new clips and provided the appropriate backdrop to each performance.
