JOSH GROBAN
HARMONY TOUR 2022
SET AND LIGHTING DESIGN: A.J. Pen, Jeff Farrow
LIGHTING DIRECTOR: Amy Edge
JOSH RELEASED AN ALBUM on Thanksgiving during the pandemic year of 2020. Other than the livestream event that celebrated the record release, there was no live touring to promote this record. The Great Big Radio City Show was his first return to the stage with a live audience, and now that he was in front of people again Josh Groban was ready to tour in support of his “Harmony” album.
We decided to keep production fairly lean for this outing. Josh’s shows always include an orchestral component as well as a local choir at each performance, and we created a backdrop of musicians behind the touring band consisting of piano, guitar, bass, drums and percussion. Upstage of a novel curved set of orchestra risers we created a rear wall treatment with one of Sew What’s metal mesh products. Lighting Director Amy Edge would spend time each day carefully placing, scrunching, splicing and arranging this backdrop to achieve a beautiful textured backdrop behind the entire production.
Josh sent us some reference images from some concerts that he was enjoying on YouTube, and the recurring theme was the organic feel of the tungsten filament visible in a clear Edison light bulb. We sourced oversized bulbs to hang from pendants in front of the mesh backdrop and they provided the finishing touch to give the set an elegant feel.
