KONGOS
EGOMANIAC TOUR 2016
SET AND LIGHTING DESIGN: A.J. Pen
Lighting Director: Tyler Pigeon
Video Content: Kongos Brothers
THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME that the band Kongos asked for “arena level production” for a club tour. Once again, the constraints of smaller stages and truck space would inform gear and staging decisions. And once again, video content would be important to the artist as they created all of their own images and were now proud owners of their own Resolume media server!
I settled on an arrangement of three rear-projection screens: two in landscape orientation flanking one portrait screen centre stage. The arrangement loosely mimicked the band’s “Tokoloshe Man” logo. To break up the monolithic straight lines imposed by the screen arrangement, we asked Christie Lites to bend some 20’ aluminum pipes for us to create lighting positions that would curve over the heads of the performers with moving head light fixtures dangling at their tips.
We did not employ any LED wall product in this design. However, there were two unique LED products incorporated in to the design: the Solaris Mozart and SGM LT-200 tubes were peppered about the stage allowing for diverse and unique looks. LD Tyler Pigeon used programming from the previous “Lunatic” tour to explore this new lighting system, then added his own touch as the band added their new material to the set list.
